Joint Press Release
Recruiting Opens for
Seventh Year of TOMODACHI MetLife Women’s Leadership Program
Fostering Future Female Leaders Who Will Thrive in the Global Arena
TOKYO, May 27, 2019 – MetLife Japan and the TOMODACHI Initiative are pleased to announce the start of the application process for the seventh year of the TOMODACHI MetLife Women’s Leadership Program (TMWLP) in Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, and Naha, from May 27, 2019.
TMWLP began in 2013 with the aim of developing the next generation of global female leaders. It provides Japanese female university students with over 10 months of leadership development training, as well as one-on-one mentoring from experienced female professionals.
Guided by five core leadership competencies (self-awareness, collaboration, pay-it-forward, global perspective, and resilience), the participants acquire skills and the confidence to become future leaders while building broad networks through training in Japan and in the United States.
To date, 538 women (269 university students and 269 mentors) have participated in the program, with many alumni reporting a clearer vision of the desired direction for their lives and careers as a result of participation.
“The TMWLP is a clear reflection of our commitment to be a good corporate citizen by helping Japan deal with societal issues. By helping hundreds of young women to become global leaders, we believe we’re starting to build the foundation for real social change that will help further Japan’s economic development,” said Representative Statutory Executive Officer, Chairman, President and CEO of MetLife Japan Eric Clurfain.
U.S.-Japan Council (Japan) Representative Director and President Irene Hirano Inouye said, “We are extremely honored to partner with MetLife to invest in the Japanese female leaders of tomorrow together. The skills and networks that they have acquired through the program will help them to grow and become better leaders. We have no doubt that they will continue to inspire one another and inspire positive change in Japanese society and beyond.”
In 2018, the program launched the TMWLP Alumni Community to provide past participants with the means to broaden and deepen their professional networks. The Alumni Community provides opportunities for past participants to support one another’s ongoing leadership journeys so they can continue to grow and achieve success on their own terms. Building on their experiences in the TMWLP, some chose to visit their mentors’ companies to learn more about the business world, while others are actively tackling social challenges with energy and passion — proof of the program’s enduring impact.
TMWLP is expected to engage nearly 750 women by 2020. The program will continue to provide Japanese women with opportunities to grow, become agents of change in society, and collectively advance women’s empowerment in Japan.
